How to Rank on ChatGPT: What Actually Determines Whether AI Recommends You
"How do I rank on ChatGPT" is the wrong question asked for the right reason. There is no ranking. There is no index position, no results page, no place to climb to.
What exists instead is a threshold. Either a model can identify your business, describe it accurately and support that description from sources it trusts — or it cannot, and it names someone else. The useful question is what puts you over that threshold.
**Start with access**
Before anything else, confirm that AI crawlers can reach your site. GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and CCBot are the ones that matter most. Check robots.txt, then check your CDN and firewall separately, because bot protection frequently blocks them independently of anything in that file.
This is worth doing first because it is binary and because it is more often wrong than people expect. Everything downstream is wasted if the door is shut.
**Make the facts machine-readable**
Structured data is how you state things unambiguously. Organisation schema establishing who you are. Service or product schema describing what you sell. LocalBusiness data placing you. Person schema for named professionals with real credentials. FAQ schema for direct question-and-answer pairs.
The test is simple: could a model answer a factual question about your business from your markup alone, without interpreting any prose? For most sites the answer is no.
**Make your identity consistent**
Models cross-reference across sources. Your business name, address, licence details and category should be identical on your site, your Google Business Profile, the relevant regulator's register, LinkedIn, industry directories and anywhere else you appear.
In Dubai this takes real effort. Free zone entities, DED licences and trading names routinely produce several legitimate versions of a company's name, and the resulting ambiguity is invisible to you and significant to a model. Pick the canonical version, use it everywhere, and reconcile the rest.
**Write things worth quoting**
A model retrieving from your site works with passages, not pages. It needs a chunk of text that stands alone: a clear question, a direct answer, a specific fact.
In practice this means shorter self-contained sections rather than one long narrative. Direct answers before elaboration rather than after. Specific numbers, dates, qualifications, ranges — the things that can be lifted into a sentence. And honest hedging where hedging is warranted, because models are measurably more willing to cite a source that acknowledges limits than one making absolute claims.
The uncomfortable implication: much of what makes a page convert badly hurts its citability, and the reverse. Separate the jobs across different pages rather than compromising both on one.
**Get into the sources models trust**
Every category has a set of sources assistants defer to, and they differ more than you would guess. Health leans on regulators and clinical references. Property leans on trade press and government explainers. Professional services lean on registers and industry publications.
Working out your category's set — and then earning genuine presence in it — is the slowest part of this work and the most durable. It is also the part that cannot be shortcut with markup.
**Then measure it deliberately**
Ask the assistants the questions your customers actually ask. Use their phrasing, not your marketing vocabulary. Do it across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot, because they draw on different sources and will disagree. Do it in English and Arabic if your market has any Arabic-speaking base. Record the answers verbatim, and repeat on a schedule.
This is the whole measurement apparatus. It is unglamorous and reproducible and it is the only signal you will get, because the channel produces no analytics of its own.
**A realistic expectation**
Technical work — crawler access, structured data, page structure — often shifts assistant answers within weeks. Citation presence takes months. Entity consistency is fast to fix and slow to propagate.
And the honest caveat: none of this is guaranteed, because these systems change and nobody outside the labs knows exactly how retrieval and ranking work internally. What is defensible is that being parseable, consistent, specific and corroborated makes you more citable than being none of those things. Everything beyond that claim is inference.
For a Dubai business the calculus is straightforward. The market is expensive and crowded in every established channel and nearly empty in this one. The threshold is not high yet. That is the entire reason to move now.
