Bridgewater is Nova Scotia's South Shore commercial hub — about 9,000 people in the town, but the retail, healthcare and industrial service centre for Lunenburg County and much of the western South Shore. The economy runs on the Michelin tire plant (one of the largest employers in Atlantic Canada), retail serving the South Shore catchment, healthcare through the South Shore Regional Hospital, and light manufacturing plus trades supporting the tourism corridor down to Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. Unlike Lunenburg's tourism-only economy, Bridgewater is a working commercial town — the businesses here serve a real regional customer, not a summer visitor.
