Why Your Calgary Business Is Stuck on Page 2 of Google (And the 5 Fixes)
Page 2 of Google is the cruelest place in digital marketing. You are close enough to see the finish line — your website appears when you search your own business category, you show up in Search Console with impressions, you can almost taste page one. But almost nobody looks at page two. Studies consistently show that fewer than 1% of Google searchers click on a page two result. For your Calgary business, page two might as well be page two hundred.
The frustrating part is that being on page two means you have done some things right. Your website exists. Google knows about it. Your content is relevant enough to rank — just not relevant enough to rank well. You are not starting from zero. You are starting from 80% — and that last 20% is what separates businesses that get found from businesses that get forgotten.
Here are the five most common reasons Calgary businesses get stuck on page two, with specific fixes for each.
Reason 1: Thin content that does not satisfy search intent. This is the most common page-two trap for Calgary businesses, and it is the most fixable. Google's job is to show the most helpful result for every search query. If someone searches "family lawyer Calgary" and your page is a 200-word overview that says "We practice family law in Calgary. Call us for a consultation," Google has very little reason to rank it above a competitor's page that has 1,500 words covering divorce proceedings, child custody, property division, mediation options, costs, and a FAQ section addressing common Calgary family law questions.
The fix: Audit your key service and landing pages. Are they genuinely the best answer someone could find for the search query they target? If someone searches "HVAC repair Calgary" and lands on your page, do they find everything they need to decide to call you — your service areas, emergency availability, pricing transparency, qualifications, reviews, and clear contact information? Or do they find three sentences and a stock photo? Every page that targets a competitive Calgary keyword should be 800 to 2,000 words of genuinely useful content. Not filler. Not keyword-stuffed paragraphs. Real information that helps the searcher and demonstrates your expertise.
Reason 2: A weak or incomplete Google Business Profile. For local searches in Calgary — which include any search with a neighborhood name, "near me," or a city reference — Google Business Profile is the single most important ranking factor. And we audit Calgary businesses every week where the GBP is either unclaimed, incomplete, or untouched since it was set up three years ago. A Google Business Profile with five photos, no business description, outdated hours, and zero posts in the past year is telling Google that this business is inactive. Google will not recommend an apparently inactive business to searchers.
The fix: Log into your Google Business Profile today and treat it like your most important marketing asset — because it is. Upload at least 25 high-quality photos including your storefront, team, and examples of your work. Write a detailed business description that naturally includes what you do and where in Calgary you do it. Confirm your hours are accurate including holidays. Add every service you offer. Set your service area to include the specific Calgary neighborhoods and surrounding communities you serve. Post an update at least once per week — a project photo, a tip, a seasonal offer, a team highlight. Respond to every review within 48 hours. This alone can move a Calgary business from page two to the Maps three-pack within weeks.
Reason 3: Not enough reviews — or reviews that stopped coming. Google uses review velocity — the rate at which new reviews arrive — as a freshness signal. A Calgary business with 150 reviews, all from 2023 and 2024, looks stale compared to a competitor with 80 reviews that include 10 from the past month. Google wants to recommend businesses that are actively serving satisfied clients right now, not businesses that were popular three years ago.
The fix: Build a systematic review process into your business operations. Every satisfied client gets a review request — via text, email, or in person. The best time to ask is immediately after a positive interaction: after a successful project completion, after a dental appointment where the patient compliments your work, after a legal matter resolves favorably. Make it easy — send a direct link to your Google review page. Set a minimum target of five new reviews per month. Over six months, that compounds into 30 new recent reviews, which is enough to significantly impact your local rankings in Calgary.
Reason 4: Technical SEO issues you cannot see. Technical problems are invisible to the business owner but obvious to Google. Your website might look fine when you visit it, but behind the scenes, Google's crawlers might be encountering slow load times, broken links, missing meta descriptions, duplicate content, improper redirects, or missing schema markup. These issues do not break your website for visitors — they break your website for Google.
The fix: Run your website through Google PageSpeed Insights and aim for a mobile score above 80. Check Google Search Console for crawl errors, coverage issues, and Core Web Vitals problems. The most common technical issues for Calgary business websites are oversized images that were never compressed, which slow your site to a crawl on mobile. Missing or duplicate title tags and meta descriptions, which confuse Google about what each page is about. No schema markup — LocalBusiness, ProfessionalService, or Service schema — which means Google has to guess your business category instead of being told. Broken internal links from old pages that were deleted without redirects. Mobile usability issues that make your site frustrating on phones. Each of these is fixable, often in a single afternoon with the right expertise.
Reason 5: Targeting the wrong keywords entirely. This is the most strategic reason for a page-two ranking, and it is the hardest to diagnose yourself. You might be stuck on page two for "lawyer Calgary" because that keyword is dominated by firms with 15 years of SEO history and hundreds of backlinks. You are not going to outrank them in six months. But you could rank on page one within three months for "immigration lawyer Calgary NE" or "startup lawyer Beltline" or "commercial lease lawyer Calgary" — niche keywords that have real search volume but far less competition. Many Calgary businesses are stuck on page two because they are fighting battles they cannot win while ignoring battles they could win easily.
The fix: Use Google Search Console to see which keywords you currently rank for on page two. Then ask two questions about each one. First, is this keyword actually achievable, or is it dominated by entrenched competitors with massive authority? If the top five results are national brands or firms with thousands of backlinks, you need a different keyword — not more effort on the same one. Second, are there more specific versions of this keyword that you could realistically rank for? "SEO Calgary" might be out of reach, but "SEO for dentists Calgary" or "SEO for contractors Calgary" might be wide open. This is the niche strategy that works in Tier 1 metros — you do not compete for the generic term. You own the specific term, capture the clients who are actually ready to buy, and build authority that eventually lets you compete for the broader keyword from a position of strength.
The page-two trap is fixable. Every reason on this list has a clear solution, and most Calgary businesses are dealing with two or three of them simultaneously. Fixing all five — beefing up content, completing your Google Business Profile, building a review engine, resolving technical issues, and refining your keyword targeting — creates a compound effect. Each fix reinforces the others. Better content improves rankings. Better rankings bring more visitors. More visitors generate more reviews. More reviews improve Maps visibility. Better Maps visibility drives more traffic to your improved content. That virtuous cycle is what separates page-one businesses from page-two businesses in Calgary. And the gap between them grows wider every month.
