Thompson is Manitoba's Hub of the North — about 13,000 residents on the Burntwood River in northern Manitoba, roughly 750 km north of Winnipeg. Home to Vale's Thompson nickel mine and smelter (a foundational nickel operation), the University College of the North, Manitoba Hydro-and-Keeyask service work, and the regional service hub for the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, and the wider northern Manitoba service catchment. Predominantly Anglophone with a significant Cree community.
