Google Business Profile Optimization in Vancouver

The listing that appears above your website for local searches — set up properly, kept accurate, and run so it keeps earning reviews

For a local search on a phone, the first thing a Vancouver customer sees can be something other than a website. It is the map and the three businesses listed under it, with their photos, ratings and opening hours. That block is drawn from Google Business Profiles, and Google says what decides it: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is fixed by where you are and where the searcher is standing. Relevance and prominence are largely in your hands — and in a dense city where several competitors sit within a few blocks of each other, the difference between a profile that is complete and maintained and one that was claimed years ago and left alone can be the whole difference.

Much of the Local Result Is Not Your Website

For many local searches, Google answers with a map and a short list of businesses before any website appears. A customer can call, get directions, read reviews and check whether you are open without ever visiting your site. That makes the profile behind the listing one of the most valuable things a local business has online, and an easy one to neglect. Google's own explanation of local ranking names three things. Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched — which is why the primary category, the services you list and the description matter. Distance is how far you are from the searcher, which you cannot change. Prominence is how well known you are, which Google says draws on reviews, links and how established you are across the web. In a dense part of Vancouver, where several businesses of the same kind may be within a short walk of each other, distance stops separating you, and relevance and prominence decide it. A profile with the right category, complete details, real photos, current hours and a steady flow of answered reviews gives Google more reason to show it than one that has not been touched since it was claimed. None of this is technically difficult. It is mostly getting the details right once, keeping them right, and building a review habit — which is why it is easy to leave undone.

What the Setup and Optimization Covers

Categories

The most specific primary category that genuinely describes the business, and secondary categories that reflect what you actually do. This is one of the clearest relevance signals a profile has.

Service areas and address

A storefront shows its address; a business that serves customers at their location can set a service area and hide the address. Getting this right matters for both ranking and Google's rules.

Services, products and description

What you do, written the way customers search for it, so the profile can match more of the searches you want.

Photos

Direction on what to photograph — the work, the space, the entrance, the team — so the profile shows the business as it is now.

Posts and hours

Regular updates, and hours that stay correct, including holiday hours set in advance.

A review process

A simple way for your staff to ask every customer for a review, consistently, and to reply to every review — within Google's policies.

Google's Rules Matter More Than People Expect

Google publishes guidelines for what a Business Profile may and may not do, and breaking them can get a profile suspended — which, for a local business, can mean disappearing from the map with little warning. A few matter particularly for Vancouver businesses. The business name on the profile has to match the name the business actually uses; adding keywords or a neighbourhood to it is against the rules, however tempting. Virtual offices and coworking addresses are generally not eligible unless the business is staffed there during its stated hours, which matters for small businesses that work from shared space. A business that serves customers at their location rather than receiving them should use a service area rather than show an address it does not operate from. And reviews cannot be bought, incentivised, or requested only from the customers you expect to be happy. We set profiles up within those rules, and we will tell you if something you are currently doing puts the profile at risk.

A Neglected Profile Against a Maintained One

Claimed and left alone

✗A broad primary category, or the wrong one
✗Hours that were right when it was set up
✗A handful of old photos, some from customers
✗Reviews that stopped arriving months ago, unanswered
✗No services listed, and no description worth reading

Set up and maintained

✓The most specific category that fits, with relevant secondaries
✓Hours and holiday hours kept current
✓Recent photos of the work, the space and the team
✓A steady flow of new reviews, every one answered
✓Services and description written the way customers search

Google Business Profile — Common Questions

How much does Google Business Profile optimization cost in Vancouver?

$950 CAD as a one-time setup and optimization, covering categories, service areas, services and products, photography direction, posts and a review process handed over to your staff. If you are on a monthly SEO engagement from $2,800 CAD, ongoing profile management is included.

Can I put keywords or my neighbourhood in my business name?

No. Google's guidelines require the profile name to match the name the business actually uses. Adding keywords can lead to the profile being suspended, and any short-term gain is not worth the risk.

I work from a coworking space. Can I use that address?

Generally only if the business is staffed there during its stated hours. Google treats virtual offices as ineligible. If you mainly serve customers at their location, a service-area profile with the address hidden is the right setup.

How do I get verified?

Google decides which verification method you are offered — it may be by video, phone, email or postcard. It is straightforward to do yourself, and it is part of the setup if you would rather not.

Can I offer a discount for reviews?

No. Google's policies prohibit offering anything in exchange for a review, and prohibit asking only the customers you expect to be happy. Breaking them risks the reviews being removed. Asking everyone, consistently, is what works.

How long until the profile ranks better?

Fixing a badly configured profile can show movement within weeks. Reviews build over months. Distance never changes, so in very competitive areas the profile improves your odds rather than guaranteeing a place in the top three.
