Website Speed & Core Web Vitals Optimization in Vancouver
Faster load times on the site you already have — LCP, INP and CLS measured on real mobile connections, with fixes ranked by what each one is worth
A slow website rarely announces itself. It loads fine on the office wifi, the owner has seen it a hundred times, and nobody complains, because the visitors who gave up waiting never got far enough to complain. Speed is the floor under everything else a site does: no headline, offer or call-to-action works on a page someone left before it finished loading. This page covers how we measure speed the way Google does, what usually slows a Vancouver business site down, and how we fix it on the platform you already have, whether that is WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace or something custom.
Signs Speed Is Holding Your Site Back
What Counts as a Good Score, and Who Decides
LCP — Largest Contentful Paint, under 2.5 seconds
How long until the biggest thing on screen — usually your hero image or headline — has actually rendered. Google treats 2.5 seconds or less as good, up to 4 seconds as needing improvement, and anything beyond that as poor.
INP — Interaction to Next Paint, under 200 milliseconds
How quickly the page visibly responds when someone taps or clicks. Good is 200ms or less, up to 500ms needs improvement, beyond that is poor. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024, so a report older than that measures something Google no longer scores.
CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift, under 0.1
How much the page jumps around while it loads. Good is 0.1 or less, up to 0.25 needs improvement. It is a unitless score rather than a time, and the usual cause is an image or ad without reserved space, shoving the text down just as someone goes to tap it.
Measured at the 75th percentile, not the average
Google assesses each metric at the 75th percentile of page loads over a rolling 28-day window. That means three quarters of your visits have to clear the threshold, not the typical one — so a site that is fast on office wifi and slow on a phone downtown can still fail while its average looks fine.
Field data and lab data answer different questions
PageSpeed Insights shows both: field data from the Chrome User Experience Report, which is what real Chrome users on your site actually experienced, and a Lighthouse lab run on a simulated device. Field data is what Google scores you on. Lab tools — Lighthouse, GTmetrix and the rest — are for diagnosing why, not for judging whether.
No field data is a finding, not a failure
A site without enough Chrome traffic gets no field data at all, and PageSpeed Insights falls back to the lab score. That is common for smaller Vancouver businesses and it is worth knowing, because it means the number you are looking at is a simulation, not your customers' experience.
What Usually Slows a Site Down
Oversized Images
The most common cause by far: photos uploaded at several megabytes each, in older formats, with no responsive sizes. Resizing, modern formats like WebP or AVIF, and lazy loading below the fold often fix the largest share of a slow LCP.
Third-Party Scripts
Chat widgets, ad and analytics tags, social embeds and review badges each load code from someone else's server. Individually small, together they are a frequent cause of slow INP and blocked rendering.
Theme, Plugin & App Weight
Page builders and plugin-heavy WordPress themes, or a long list of Shopify apps, load code on every page whether that page uses it or not.
Fonts & Layout Shift
Web fonts that swap late and images or embeds without reserved space push text around while the page loads, which is what CLS measures.
Server Response Time
Slow or overloaded hosting delays the very first byte. It is a real cause, but less common than the others, so we only recommend a hosting change when the measurements point there.
How a Speed Engagement Runs
Measure
Field data from the Chrome User Experience Report and Search Console where your site has enough traffic, plus lab runs on a simulated mid-range phone, page type by page type.
Diagnose
Trace each slow metric to its cause: the image behind a slow LCP, the script behind a slow INP, the element behind a layout shift.
Fix in Order of Impact
Biggest wins first, on your current platform: images, scripts, fonts, caching and configuration. Nothing changes on the live site without a test first.
Verify
Re-run the lab tests immediately, then watch the field data. Google's field data uses a rolling 28-day window, so the full effect takes a few weeks to show.
When Optimization Is Not Enough
Some sites cannot be made fast without replacing what they are built on: an old theme that loads everything on every page, a page builder whose output cannot be slimmed down, or a hosted platform that gives no control over the code. When the measurements show that, we say so in the findings rather than selling weeks of tuning that will not hold. In that case a rebuild, which for us means a custom Next.js site, is the honest recommendation.
Vancouver Website Speed — Common Questions
Does website speed affect Google rankings?
It is one input among many. Core Web Vitals are part of the page experience signals Google uses, but relevance and content quality matter far more, so a fast page with weak content will not outrank a slower page that answers the search better. Speed matters most as a tie-breaker between similar pages, and for keeping the visitors you already get.
What is a good LCP score?
2.5 seconds or less, measured at the 75th percentile of your real page loads. Between 2.5 and 4 seconds Google calls it needs improvement; past 4 seconds it is poor. The companion thresholds are 200 milliseconds for INP and 0.1 for CLS.
PageSpeed Insights says one thing and GTmetrix says another — which do I trust?
Neither is wrong; they measure different things. PageSpeed Insights reports field data from real Chrome users alongside a simulated lab run, and the field half is what Google actually scores. GTmetrix and Lighthouse are lab tools — they run your page on a simulated device under set conditions, which is exactly what you want for diagnosing a cause, and not what you want for deciding whether you have a problem. Use the field data to decide, the lab tools to investigate.
Is my site slow enough to need this, or am I overthinking it?
Run it through Google PageSpeed Insights first — if your mobile score is comfortably above 80-90, speed likely isn't your main problem and the audit would focus more on funnel and form friction instead. Below that, speed is worth addressing regardless of what else is going on.
Do I need to change hosting to get a faster website?
Sometimes, but not usually as the first move. Most speed problems come from unoptimized images, render-blocking scripts, and theme or app bloat — all fixable without touching hosting. We only recommend a hosting change when the audit shows the server response time itself is the bottleneck.
Can you speed up a WordPress, Shopify or Squarespace site without rebuilding it?
Usually, yes, within limits. WordPress and Shopify give enough control to fix images, scripts, apps and caching. Squarespace and Wix allow less, so the gains are smaller. The findings say which fixes are possible on your platform before any work starts.
How long until Search Console shows the improvement?
Lab tests show changes straight away. The field data Google scores you on is a rolling 28-day window of real visits, so it takes up to about four weeks for an improvement to show fully in PageSpeed Insights and Search Console.
